After what happened in 2020, is there any point in even writing a “Most Anticipated Movies of 2021” list anymore?
There’s no doubt in my mind that some of these movies will end up being delayed into 2022, and several of the movies included were originally in my list of “Most Anticipated Movies of 2020”, hand there’s now a lot of originally scheduled 2021 movies included as well.
As a result this list is looking pretty bloated now, and so I’ve split it into two parts, the films I’m REALLY excited for and then other films I want to see (but just not as much).
Here’s my most anticipated movies of 2021: -
The Matrix 4 / MATRIX
My favourite movie of all time is getting a “legacy sequel,” so this is definitely my most anticipated film of 2021 by far. However, I will acknowledge the sequels Reloaded and Revolutions were disappointing compared to the original, so there’s a chance the fourth movie won’t live up to expectations either. I have various theories of how a fourth Matrix can exist with characters who “died” during the trilogy, but that’s a blogpost for another time.
No Time To Die
Originally supposed to release in 2019, the latest Bond film has already been delayed 3 times (and there’s already rumours of it being delayed again!), but I’m a huge Bond fan and if it wasn’t for the Matrix this would be my most anticipated movie of the year. The trailers looks great and Daniel Craig era of 007 films have also been great, so hoping he goes out with a bang.
My favourite comicbook super-hero gets his third solo film within the MCU. Now I’m not going to lie, I am nervous about all the rumours of a multiverse movie with multiple Spider-Man and villains, but Marvel Studios has delivered huge team up movies before, so if they can deliver here I’ll be happy.
Mission Impossible 7
I’ve always enjoyed the Mission Impossible movies, and the sixth instalment Fallout was the best in my opinion, so I am super hyped for this sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick
Part nostalgia / part spectacle – Top Gun: Maverick looks great!
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
I’m genuinely interested to see how this movie plays out, I really enjoyed Man of Steel, but was pretty disappointed by Batman v Superman (even though the ultimate edition is slightly better), and always thought it was a shame we’d never get see what Zack Snyder actually envisioned for Justice League. Joss Wheedon’s version is fine, but it’s bland and forgettable, so I’d rather prefer it didn’t exist and I guess once Znyder’s version is released we can.
Black Widow / Eternals / Shang Chi
I’m huge fan of the MCU so I’m excited for all these new entries to kick of phase 4, however none of them include my favourite characters (and I’d be lying if I said I knew anything about Eternals or Shang Chi) so I’ve combined into one entry.
The below movies I’m still really excited to see,
- The Quiet Place Part 2
- Godzilla v Kong
- Ghostbusters: After Life
- Space Jam Legacy
- Venom 2
- The Suicide Squad
- Raya The Last Dragon
- The King’s Man
- Fast & Furious 9
- Army of the Dead
There’s also the fact now that Disney + are releasing film quality tv series on their streaming service, so I’m also just excited for all of these series as I am for their movie counterparts.
- Falcon and The Winter Soldier
- The Book of Boba Fett
- The Mandalorian
