I haven’t had much time to update the MoviePush blog lately, but here’s a short (and 2 weeks late) review of Deadpool 2. Enjoy...
Structurally I think it has a better narrative than the
original and the action scenes are significantly better choreographed, it has
lots of funny jokes throughout and it also has 3 incredibly comedic sequences
that are laugh out loud hilarious! However there’s a decision made early on
that really threw me and as a result the movie takes itself “quite seriously”
for the first act.
Whereas the original film felt like a R-Rated comedy which
just happened to star a superhero, Deadpool 2 seems to be trying to tell a more
traditional superhero story with some R-Rated comedy. This tonal
struggle is most apparent in the first act. The movie really gets fun again
once X-Force are introduced, but I was definitely conflicted on whether I was
enjoying the film for the first 30-40 minutes.
Ryan Reynolds once again proves he's the best person on the planet to play Wade Wilson / Deadpool, and all the supporting cast do a great job too. Of these, Cable and Domino are particular standouts, though I don't think this is unexpected.
The mid-credits scene is amazing (and one of the top 3
sequences I mentioned above). It is so funny, and athough it corrects my biggest
issue, this ultimately then undermines the whole movie, so again mixed
feelings.
Deadpool 2 is a fun and enjoyable watch, but it’s not
without a few problems.
