As is becoming tradition on MoviePush I’ve pulled together a
list of my most anticipated films of the upcoming year.
Now, 2017 was an absolutely stand-out year for movies in my
opinion. I did a top ten movies of 2017 blogpost, but the quality of movies
released were so high in 2017 I could have easily done a top 20 or even 30. As
a result 2018 has a lot to live up too, there are definitely some movies I’m
looking forward too and one in particular more so than anything in recent memory,
but I’ll be surprised if 2018 gets anywhere near to the volume of quality films
from last year.
Anyway, here we go, my most anticipated movies for 2018 are…
1) Avengers Infinity War
Let’s not beat around the bush on this one, this is easily my
most anticipated movie of the year if not the last 5 years. The Marvel
Cinematic Universe has been building to this moment since it started and will be
bringing together most of the pre-established characters in the MCU. The Avengers
will team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to finally take on Thanos in his
quest for the Infinity Gauntlet. I do wonder how a movie with this many
characters will be able to balance everything and feel cohesive, but the MCU
has the benefit of spending years introducing and building audience
relationships with all of these characters, so I have faith it will deliver an exhilarating
and satisfying movie.
Although I think Avengers Infinity War will very much be part one of an over-arching story, I’m hoping it doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger
and has somewhat of a conclusion so it feels like a complete film. Either way,
if I was only able to see one film this year it would have to be Avengers
Infinity War.
Now after my huge excitement for Avengers, these other films
are little further down the hype radar, but I’m still very much looking forward
to these movies (in no particular order)…
2) Jurassic World:
Fallen Kingdom
I loved Jurassic World, the reboot / sequel that re-launched
the Jurassic franchise in 2015. The first trailer introduced us to the premise
of the new movie (Dinosaurs and an exploding volcano!), which looks interesting, yet there were a few too many “seen
it before” moments that slightly dampened my enthusiasm. Hopefully this is a
result of lacklustre trailer rather than a lacklustre movie, so still really looking
forward to this.
3) Spider-Man: Into The
Spider-Verse
Spider-Man is my joint favourite superhero (tied with Batman),
so I’m super excited for any new movies featuring the web-slinger. This will be
particularly interesting as it’s the first movie to focus on Miles Morales, and
based on the first teaser trailer the animation looks absolutely spectacular.
4) Black Panther
Marvel can seemingly do no wrong at the moment, and after a
year of Marvel sequels / reboots, it’s nice to get an original solo outing with
a new hero. We’ve been introduced to the titular hero Black Panther in Captain
America: Civil War, and he was great so I can’t wait to see him in his own film
and get properly introduced to his world and Wakanda. Based on the trailers it
looks like Black Panther will take itself quite seriously, and although the
comedy of Thor and Guardians is fun, I’m looking forward to a movie that plays
it more straight.
5) Mission Impossible 6
We’ve yet to see any official promotion for the latest
Mission Impossible instalment, thinking about it I don’t think they’ve even
announced the official title. I’m assumimg it won’t be Mission Impossible 6,
and more like Mission Impossible: Something Subtitle. I’ve always enjoyed these
films, the last two in particular have come into their own and with Chris McQuarrie returning I'm expecting this to be a lot of fun.
6) Deadpool 2
The first was hugely funny and entertaining, and as long as the sequel follows suit I’ll be very happy. To be honest I’m just as excited to
see what crazy marketing and promotional stunts Ryan Reynolds and studio come
up with to advertise the movie!
7) Coco
If you live in America you’ll have already seen this, but in
the UK Coco isn’t released until January 2018. The concept itself looks great
and original, and the reviews and reactions have also been stellar. So hopefully
this is Pixar back on top form and is likely to be the first film I see in the
cinema this year.
8) The Incredibles 2
A 2nd Pixar film in the same year, and a sequel
to one of their best films. Cannot wait!
9) The Irishman
Scorsese. De Niro. Pacino. Pesci. Keitel. Some of the biggest names in cinematic history return and team up for this Netflix Original movie. Potential to be the next Godfather? We can hope.

10) Sicario 2: Soldado
I loved the original, very dark and gritty but extremely engaging. The sequel looks like it will be more action-packed and as it focuses on Benicio Del Toro's Soldado, I absolutely can't wait.
Other films I’m (sort of) looking forward to and will no
doubt take a trip to the cinema to see are below: -
Creed 2 – enjoyed the first one very much, so definitely
interested to see the sequel.
Tomb Raider – looks like it staying very close to the rebooted
version of the game, so looking forward to it.
Alita: Battle Angel – remember reading about James Cameron wanting
to make this when I was still in school over 17 years ago, so will definitely be
checking it out. And no the big Manga eyes didn’t bother me.
Pacific Rim: Uprising – looks a bit more like a Transformers
film and Del Toro is no longer directing, but in terms of spectacle I’m sure it’ll
be worth seeing on the big screen.
The Predator – love Shane Black as a writer and director, so
with him returning to the Predator franchise, this has me very interested. I wonder
if it’ll be set at Christmas?
Aquaman – should be more excited, but DCEU films aren’t exactly guaranteed to be great, and with the poor reception to Justice League, I fear there will be further studio interference in this latest DC instalment.
Finally, the below films are ones I’m interested to see how
they turn out but at this stage I’m not particularly excited for them: -
Ready Player One – being born in the 80s and being a bit of a geek, this movie should be screaming out to me. It looks very different to anything we’ve seen before (and it’s great to have some original movies), but I’m not completely convinced yet.
Venom – open mind, but we’ll see. Not expecting great
things, but I'll be happy
X-Men: Dark Phoenix – I was really disappointed with Apocalypse,
but First Class and Days of Future Past were both great, so let’s hope Dark
Phoenix is more in line with those.
X-Men: The New Mutants – It'll be interesting see how a superhero
horror movie turns out.
Solo: A Star Wars Story – I'm not really bothered about this to
be honest, I don’t think there’s any need for a Han Solo origin movie and
combined with the production issues I’d be surprised if this movie turns out to
be anything more than ok. But it’s Star Wars, so of course I’ll be seeing it. However, the fact it releases in less than 5 months and there’s been no marketing for
it does not bode well…
Bumblebee – Look, the Transformers films were never great,
but in terms of spectacle the first four were fine. However, last year’s instalments The
Last Knight, was literally one of the worst films I’ve ever seen and completely
killed the little enthusiasm I had left for franchise. Now saying that, Michael Bay
isn’t directing Bumblebee so there is potential for this to be an improvement,
but we’ll have to wait and see.
So that’s my list of most anticipated movies for 2018, what are you looking forward to
seeing this year?
