According to a report at THR The Hangover Part 2 is going to open big this weekend, real big. How big? How about $100m plus.
Is this really possible? This is an adult comedy that's likely to retread the originals story step by step and it is tracking to open north of $100 million?
This will make it the biggest opening at the box office of 2011 so far. That's better than Fast Five, Pirates 4 and Thor, all of which had family ratings so made it easier for a wider audience to go and see them.
Don't get me wrong I think it's going to be successful (there's no doubt about that) but for a movie of this genre (and age rating) to open this huge will be a really big deal. No R-rated comedy has ever opened to this sort of money and according to the report the last movie to open with over $100m was Toy Story 3 last year.
Hopefully it will be successful as then movie studios are likely to green-light more adult-rated films (once they realise the potential revenue they can generate).
What do you think?
I guess we'll find out this weekend and don't forget to look out for my movie marketing review.
