Snow White and the Huntsman Movie Review

I was excited for Snow White and the Huntsman ever since I saw the first teaser trailer. I really dug the look and feel, but usually when the movie marketing for a film looks overly stylised the finished product doesn't always live up to it or the story falls flat. Not so here...

Count me impressed, SWATH delivers on nearly all fronts with great acting, a good story, exciting sequences and truly magical special effects.

Technically the film is outstanding. The sheer amount of creativity and fantasy on screen in SWATH is absolutely stunning. Although I imagine most of it is CG, it looks completely real for the most part. The costume designs are all incredible, dark, gothic and fit realistically into this world. And the dwarfs special effect is even better than that deployed by the Hobbits.

The acting is good, with Charlize Theron the stand-out playing the wicked witch and Chris Hemsworth the titular Huntsman. Kirsten Stewart does ok and plays her part adequately but she definitely isn't outstanding.

If anything the middle drags (but only slightly) and then at other times the story point feel slightly rushed. But otherwise this is a very stylised and satisfying summer blockbuster.

8.5/10

Incredible New The Dark Knight Rises Posters

I've blogged previously about my thoughts on the underwhelming movie marketing for The Dark Knight Rises and yesterday Warner Bros debuted a new poster, which didn't exactly break the trend. It looked like a poorly photo-shopped fan-made poster.

Anyway today sees the release of three new character posters, and boy have Warner Bros redeemed themselves, these are INCREDIBLE. Get me high-res versions now!

Love the style and they finally give the Dark Knight Rises it's own identity rather than re-hasing what has been done previously. Can't wait to see these on billboards and bus stops on the lead up to the films release.

What do you think?

Twitter Teases New Skyfall Poster

The official James Bond @007 twitter page has dropped several teasing tweets that the first official poster for new Bond film Skyfall will be released today at 5pm GMT.

However if it's anything like the first poster for the last entry in series Quantum of Solace (which was literally Bond's shadow) maybe we shouldn't get too excited.

Here's hoping for something a little more revealing when the movie marketing begins later today...

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Underwhelms?

A global viral campaign has led to the gradual release of the new (and supposedly final) The Dark Knight Rises trailer which if I'm honest I'm slightly disappointed with.

I've read a lot of post over the web saying how incredible and earth shattering this new trailer is. But it's really not, the final film itself may be incredible, but this trailer isn't. Compare the final trailer for The Dark Knight to this and tell me honestly which film has the better movie marketing.

It plays out more like an extended teaser with no real plot points given away, but just a collection of dis-connected sound bites and screenshots. This may help the final film experience, in that none of the story or set-up has been given away. However in light of seeing the huge and amazing experience that is The Avengers, I can't help but feel this new trailer underwhelms...

It's main money shot is a stadium implosion we have already scene and the one scene that truly impresses is literally saved for the last second. I'm a bit confused how a film that's being sold as "the epic conclusion" doesn't currently feel overly epic.

Look I don't want a lazy trailer that just gives away a film's story beats one by one, but I do want to be hyped for a film. See the Prometheus trailer for a perfect example of this. I feel the hype for this film is currently being driven by the goodwill carried over from The Dark Knight rather than anything we've seen from TDKR.

Is it just me, or is anyone else not blown away by this trailer?
