Since the release dates have been announced for the final two instalments of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn there has been a major reshuffle amongst the currently confirmed movie releases for November 2012.
Yesterday Summit Entertainment announced that Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 would be released a year apart with Part 2 reaching cinemas on November 16, 2012. This date had previously been held by Disney/ Pixar’s Monster Inc. 2 which has now been bought forward to November 2. This in turn has caused Dreamworks Pictures who had planned to release their new animation The Guardians on the same date back to November 21. Still with me?
It just goes to show how careful the distributors and marketers are when it comes to release date schedules and keeping an eye of the competition. You could argue that Monsters and Twilight would be aiming at completely different demographics, but there’s only so much wallet share so even if two films aren’t direct competitors, releasing two franchise films on the same weekend can have a detrimental effect on both their profits.
However, Summit Entertainment knew that Monster Inc. 2 was confirmed for a Nov 16, 2012 release and they still chose it. This not only shows the confidence they have in the Twilight brand, but also acknowledges that Disney fully respect the power of this vampire teen franchise and felt they should step aside.
